Capsule Hotels

Three pod hotels, two in Tokyo and one in Vienna, where the bed is the room and the building supplies the rest.

Smart Stay SHIZUKU Shinagawa-Oimachi

Tokyo, Japan

Oimachi Station is about a minute away. That makes this a simple base on the south side of Tokyo, with Haneda Airport within easy reach.

The pods go a step beyond the classic format. Some are wide enough for two. Bathrooms are shared, and the large public bath and sauna are the real reward after a long day on foot.

On site, a restaurant serves food and drinks from brunch into the evening, so the building does more than store sleepers. Reception runs around the clock.

Hotel Siesta

Ebisu, Tokyo, Japan

No theme, no concept. Hotel Siesta is a capsule hotel of the traditional sort, about a minute from Ebisu Station, with pods, lockers and a bath.

Men and women sleep on separate floors, each with its own shower room and sauna. The pods are compact, so bags go into lockers rather than into the sleeping space.

Ebisu is the reason to choose it. This is a quieter corner of Shibuya ward, known for small bars and restaurants, with Daikanyama and central Shibuya both close by.

Grand Pods

Vienna, Austria

Most capsule hotels send guests down the hall to wash. Grand Pods does not. Its units come with private bathrooms, which changes the feel of a stay more than you might expect.

Floridsdorf, Vienna's 21st district, is home to the building. It lies north of the Danube, away from the busy centre, and public transport links it with the old town.

Check-in works through a smartphone and keycard system. Each pod has adjustable lighting, charging points and soundproofing. A lounge and an outdoor seating area give guests somewhere to be besides the bed.
