Icehotel
Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Every winter the main hall is built again from nothing. Its ice comes from the Torne River, cut in blocks and kept until the cold returns, about 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle.
Artists from many countries are invited to design individual art suites, so the rooms change completely from one season to the next. Guests sleep on beds of ice, in thermal sleeping bags, at a few degrees below zero.
Most visitors pair one cold night with warm ones in heated rooms on site. Icehotel 365, a permanent building, keeps ice rooms and an ice bar open in summer as well.
Winter brings dog sledding, northern lights and very short days. Summer brings the midnight sun.
